The Life and Times of Kiki Chaos

When tempest tossed, embrace chaos.

Awesome

July14

I heard the author of the blog 1000 Awesome Things interviewed on the radio recently, and of course it made me start thinking about the little things in life that we don't often really tune into, but are actually quietly awesome.

Sometimes it's really hard not to get on here and have a bitch or moan about all the annoying 'stuff' that happens in everyday life. But the whole reason I started The Life and Times of Kiki Chaos was to focus on the things I like and make me happy, and I try to remember that.

So in the spirit of Neil Pasricha's appreciation of small awesomes, here are a few of mine*.

The Smell of Raisin Toast

My workplace provides a few kinds of bread in the kitchen, and every time someone toasts raisin bread, it seems to waft about the building and make its way into my office, where I am powerless to resist its siren lure.

That smell is awesome.

A Full Kettle

I actually heard or read somebody else speak about the small joy of a shared kettle – either at home or work or elsewhere – that is filled up by someone else after they've finished using it.

It's such a small thing, but not having to fill up the kettle yourself? Awesome.

Green Lights

Green traffic lights in general are great, but the ones I love most occur when you come cruising up behind cars already stationary at a red light, and you can slip past them all in an empty lane because the light turns green while you're still moving.

Leaving the traffic behind is awesome.

Holding a Child's Hand

I love it when you're out and about with children – a friend's child, a young family member or some other little person – and they reach up and take your hand. There's something about that completely trusting gesture that melts my heart, because they offer their hand with complete acceptance. Just because they like you.

Little hands are awesome.

Drawer Liners

When you have a drawer where the contents slide around every time you open it, and you finally get around to buying some of that squishy, sticky drawer liner stuff.

In hot pink.

Awesome.

Waking Up on Saturday

Lying in bed all cuddled up and cosy and trying to psyche yourself to get up for work.

And then remembering that it's Saturday.

That moment when you realise you can slide back into sleepiness is awesome.

***

Looking out for those little moments of awesome is a bit like a game. It's along the same lines of Daily Gratitudes, I guess.

The funny thing is, it's kind of hard to think of them before they happen. But just being aware of wanting to notice the little awesomes means you actually do start to notice when they occur.

xx Kiki

* I haven't read all of Pasricha's blog, so some of mine may already be some of his. But that's ok :)

Love these! Every single one is so true.

I haven’t read 1000 Awesome Things in a while, I should start again, it was so happy-making :)

Loving your attitude here and 100% agree with you on these! love it.

  3. That’s a great idea! (I also love a full kettle, but only just before I pour the tea)

Full kettle! Yes! Brilliant! Never thought about it before but you are so right!

I always feel torn between pleasant surprise, and having to decide whether I’d rather have water freshly oxygenated by running it from the tap. Or worse, wondering: is it leftover boiled water totally devoid of oxygen? Would it be wasteful to pour this precious resource down the sink? Neurotic, much? Still,if that was the hardest decision I had to face then I know it must have been an awesome day.

Zan – I read up about it and if you let water boil past the rolling point, it’s deoxygenated. So unless you stand by your kettle and switch it off before it starts rolling, it will be flat water. Can’t do it at work – my boss would have something to say if he saw me standing over a kettle 5 times a day – but something I’ll try to keep in mind for home.

I’ve never heard of a drawer liner before…must get one of these when I start work again

Sassandspice – $2 shops, my friend :) Most of them have drawer liners, in the kitchen section. Or just ask the SA.
