Blast from the Past – Sour Grass

July10

This blog causes me to reminisce a lot. I don't know why.

But I've had a lot of blasts from the past since starting this blog. Or maybe I just write about them now, rather than simply having them and forgetting them.

If you were one of my three siblings, or our friends growing up, the title of this post would probably cause you to start laughing.

At the memory of how much sour grass we used to eat.

And the excitement of spotting a patch of the stuff.

Like the patch I found the other day at Aunty M's.

Um, yep. We used to eat weeds.

I have vivid memories of climbing the fence between our childhood home and the two little old ladies next door, spotting all the sour grass in their yard, and jumping over like little monkeys to swipe some for a tasty snack.

Was it just us little weirdos who used to do this?

Surely those juicy, tender grass-green stalks tempted other kids as well?

I couldn't resist trying a stalk again, for old time's sake.

Om nom nom nom.

What does it taste like?

Well, it tastes like… um… sour.

It's not a citrus-y sour. It's not a real taste at all.

Just…. sour.

But not sucking-on-a-lemon, screw-up-your-face kind of sour. It's really quite pleasant.

I think my walk down memory lane was a little bit over-eager, though. I chewed 3 stalks. And got a tummy ache.

Kids must have cast iron stomachs. I'm sure I used to graze on this stuff like a little moo cow.

So, are you tempted to try it? Or do you think I'm stark raving mad? :D

If you didn't eat sour grass, I'm betting you did pick Jasmine flowers to drink the little drop of nectar out.

Remember how you had to pop out the little green plug on the bottom of some of them?

I remember standing in front of a Jasmine bush and practically denuding the whole thing!

Aren't those simple pleasures from childhood wonderful?

Reminders for us adults to occasionally stop and smell the roses, sip the jasmine and chew the sour grass ;)

I didn’t eat them, but I did suck honeysuckle. Mmmmmm, sweet goodness!

Don’t worry your not crazy, heaps of kids from school used to eat them. I never tried it, but I used to pick them and give them to my mum :P Didn’t click that I was giving her weeds :P My brother did the honeysuckle as well. I wish I did try it, but this post also reminded me of onion weed and that awful smell. I remember on school sports days which was held at a national park close by we would have to walk by loads of onion weed, urgh!

ness – I remember sometimes trying the honeysuckle with the big orange flowers, but they always seemed to have bugs in them so it wasn’t much fun… lol

Nareen – Sooo cute giving your mum weeds :) And I’m glad it wasn’t just us! If you’re brave enough, give it a go next time you see some. And I definitely remember that onion weed smell… ugh, gross!

My mouth started to get that salivating sour feeling at the back of my cheeks as soon as I thought about sour grass! Why do kids find sour things eg lollies so fun? They must have really different taste buds. Although I think I got to an age where I stopped eating it when I thought about the possibilty of dogs peeing on it (when I used to see it on the nature strip), lol.

Valankuay – lol… I think that’s why I stopped eating it too! But the patch at Aunty Ms is out of the way of dogs so I felt safe :)

Laura – LOL! How funny you googled it :) Though I’m sure your coworkers think we’re just both totally crazy!
