The Life and Times of Kiki Chaos

When tempest tossed, embrace chaos.

It’s Oscar’s Night…

February28

… and I've taken myself off to bed early with a cup of tea and my laptop to watch the red carpet arrivals in true comfort.

I've deliberately avoided hearing/reading anything about who won what (I have all my fingers and toes crossed for Colin Firth), but I have seen a few pictures from the red carpet. So far pretty under whelming, except for this one of Reese Witherspoon's hair and makeup.

I'm not usually into over-styled hair but this is just stunning. Just enough height and softness on the crown to avoid being a beehive, and with the perfect cascade of hair and flip to the ends to show this was done by a hairstylist who understands restraint.

I love Reese Witherspoon. Her image is the one I take to my hairdresser most often. What a pity I can't envisage an occasion where I could wear this hairstyle. It's truly red-carpet-only glamour hair.

While I'm waiting for the Oscars to start, I'm reading this…

… the book which is proving to be very successful at weaning me off my internet addiction.

It's practically unputdownable. I was all very smug and adult-reader-ish, pre-guessing what was going to happen, but I'm happy to be proven quite wrong so far.

I think I might pass this onto my 13 year old niece after I'm done. Hopefully I can intercept before someone gives her Twilight (which I believe she hasn't read yet, thank god), and head her off that IQ and EQ stunting path.

During the ads I will do my nails, which are hugely overdue for some attention, with my new glass nailfile.

Of course, these have been around for ages, so they're not new, but they're new to me.

I was having heaps of problems with my nails splitting and peeling, until I read on Vogue Forums that tossing out emery boards and nail clippers and embracing glass nail files would fix all my issues.

And it did! My nails haven't split or peeled since. I didn't actually believe it would work so well.

I picked up this one for $4 at Target (their own brand) and I think the diamantes are a cute touch.

I haven't tried any pricier ones, so can't compare, but this one's doing a pretty good job so I'll stick with it until I see a reason to change.

They're a bit thicker than regular emery boards, so I find filing the sides of my nails, and underneath, tricky with these, so keep a regular super-fine Black Beauty emery board on hand for that.

Ooh, red carpet arrivals have started. Gotta go!

  1. Ooh, glad you’re liking the book!

Reese did look stunning, I have to agree. The retro hair was probably one of favourites of the night – at first I wasn’t sold on it, but seeing it again a day later and I have to admit I was wrong to dislike it originally!

Julia – Thank you so much for giving me this book. I really needed something like this to break my internet habit :) I agree Reese’s hair sits out their in the “is it too much or is it just restrained?” territory… could almost swing either way… haha! :D

  2. Emm says:

I loooove Reese and I loooove retro styling. 60s ftw!

I have been using a glass file for a few years now. I think it was a gift with purchase from Avon. I find it so much smoother than using an emery board.

Did you manage to get through the entire 5 gazillion hours of the Oscars? I couldn’t do it, so major props if you managed it.

  3. Reezy says:

I’m a bit behind the times, i’ve never heard of a glass file before. How does it work?

  4. Kiki says:

Emm – The only thing I don’t like about the glass files is that ‘shudder’ you get at certain angles, which sends spasms up my spine! lol… I’m probably just unco… I DID manage to plough through the whole Oscars – what a marathon!! But worth it to clap and cheer Colin Firth. Best. Oscar. Speech. Ever. Love that man.

Reezy – You can pick them up at most chemists (usually on a stand at the counters, stuck in foam) or at Target, like I did, among their beauty tools. They work just like regular emery boards, except they’re much gentler and don’t wear out – you just wipe or rinse them when you’re done. They’re highly effective too – faster than regular emerys. I love them :)

  5. Vanessa says:

I didn’t follow the Oscars and I regret it! Gahh!

Reese’s hairstyle looks great! I love her simple make up with it, too.

  6. Kiki says:

Vanessa – I usually just watch the red carpet arrivals for the dresses, but I ended up watching the whole marathon this year. I agree about her simple makeup – a work of art.
