How to Make Cheap Flowers Look Chic
You know how much I love having fresh flowers at home, right?
And how Mr K and I argue over whose turn it is to choose them?
Well, when it was his turn and he chose these…
… and I knew they were going to last for three. long. weeks, I just had to get some flowers for me.
So I picked up some cheap geraniums at the South Melbourne Market.
This is why carnations weren't exactly my favourite flower. Straggly and boring. And pretty sad looking.
Please don't even mention adding babies breath! Hello 1983…
So why did I buy them?
Because I have a great book called Simply Green Parties by Danny Seo, and one of the pictures in it inspired me to view carnations in a new light.
You just cut them really short so the heads all bunch up close together in one pretty, frilly mass and pop them into an old tea tin.
Danny's project was about adding cute little knobs to the bottom of the tins, so I think you'd probably put the flowers in a small cup of water, rather than putting the water straight into the tin.
Even if you didn't add knobs and have the water run out of the holes, it would probably rust the tin, wouldn't it?
I actually don't have one of those old tea tins, but I do have one of those lovely floral-painted enamel tin cups that I used instead.
They look so pretty in the bathroom.
I love having a little posy of flowers in the bathroom. They add a pretty splash of colour to our monochromatic black and white colour scheme. I don't particularly like coloured towels, so even they are neutral.
Usually the enamel cup holds my makeup brushes, but now it serves double duty as a vase.
If you have one of these cups, maybe you could give it a go as a vase too

Oooh awesome idea, going to do this first thing tomorrow with my scraggly looking flowers
Jade – I reckon the cutting-them-short trick would work for a lot of scraggly flowers, not just carnations. I personally have a soft spot for posies anyway
Oh damn, I used to have exactly that tin on the left in the photo. Seems some overenthusiastic helpers relieved me of it in my last shift. Oh well, another excuse to hit the op shops again.
Zan – Hit Victoria Street, or asian grocers. I’m sure they still produce this kind of tin.
Found one! Even prettier that the one I “lost” – navy blue with birds, irises and yellow chrysanthemums. Have never seen this design before . . . I think I’ll build a collection. Thanks for the pretty pics to inspire me.
Zan – It sounds gorgeous! Can’t wait to see it
Glad to be of inspiration!
