My Blueberry Manicure

September27

I think I'm really showing my age here, but when I was a kid, Strawberry Shortcake dolls were all the rage. For anyone under… I don't know, 25?… Strawberry Shortcake and her friends were a series of small plastic dolls named – and scented – after different desserts.

This is the one I had – Blueberry Muffin and her pet mouse, Cheesecake.

They smelled like their names, or the closest approximation that fragrance-impregnated plastic can be, I suppose.

But as I kid, I adored that fake kind of scent, just like all kids seem to love things like scented textas, scratch n' sniff stickers, etc.

To be honest, it's not a very attractive doll. Cute concept though. They tried to relaunch Strawberry Shortcake and Friends a few times over the years, but they never really took off again.

Maybe if I went to a Halloween party this year, I'd go as Blueberry Muffin all grown up, and keep everyone guessing all night.

How adorable are those green stripey socks with the blue shoes?

Anyway, what does this have to do with my manicure?

Well, I picked up a bottle from a brand I've never seen before, W7 (what kind of a name for a nailpolish brand is that?) in Midnight Blue and I decided to give it a whirl today.

Even though this was the pure devil to work with – unbelievably gluggy (hopefully that's just this bottle, and not indicative of the brand) – I was absolutely thrilled with the glossy creme… and the colour.

Oh, this beautiful, beautiful bleu!

I would describe this as an almost smokey navy blue, that almost has a dark teal tinge in certain lights.

I picked Mr K up from the airport tonight (yay!) and asked him if he liked my nails, and he said, "I do. They look like blueberries". It's true. Hence the theme of this post :)

I've always shied away from blues and greens, believing that I'd look like a big kid playing in a paint box, but with W7's Midnight Blue I believe I'm won over.

This is a very sultry, sexy colour that is anything but childlike.

I love discovering new colours, especially when they're something I've previously disliked.

I'm going to have fun finding nailpolishes in this palette that's now opened up for me :)

I’ve just recently started moving away from my safe reds, pinks and beiges, too — wearing OPI’s Suzi Says Feng Shui and loving it! I keep buying greens and blues now, too, they’re the only colours that really grab my attention.

That blue is a stunning blue — would you mind if I asked where you bought it? (I totally understand if you’d rather not; don’t want another Ulta3 affair on our hands :P )

Oh, you’re so lucky to have found a navy that works so well on you! I’ve only tried one – Ulta3 Hollywood – and it was just bleehh against my skin tone :( where did you find this one?

  3. Kiki says:

A – Suzi Says Feng Shui is gorgeous. I think I’m going to have to start with the more muted blues and greens and work my way up to the brights, though! Although I’ve had my eye on Sportsgirl’s Hello Sailor, which is a stunning sky blue.

I definitely don’t mind sharing, but so you guys don’t miss out (there were only a few when I got it a couple of weeks ago), email me at kiki@kikichaos.com :)

Sixty – I agree, Hollywood’s not the kind of blue shimmer that would work well on too many people. Email me at kiki@kikichaos.com for the W7 stockist :)

Gorgeous polish! I’m quite a “safe” nail polish wearer but consider blue to be a part of my work arsenal (but only rarely, I must admit) – it can look stunning against the right outfit. My faves are L’Oreal Resist & Shine 700 (navy shimmer), Orly Blue Suede and OPI Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees.

I’m thinking about lighter blues for summer and like what I see from Kit and have also bought butter London’s Victoriana (shimmery blue/green) but am not sure how I can possibly work them into a work wardrobe just yet….

Naaw Blueberry Muffin, brings back memories! Her costume is very cute, love the socks!

I’ve recently made my first OPI purchase :D I bought Suzie says Fang Shui, Dim Sum Plum & Red My Fortune Cookie. I’ve only been brave enough to wear them on my toes so far; also more of a neutral girl. My fave for winter was Revlon Hot Chocolate (really dark brown) but every time I wore it, people at work would ask me if I turned into a goth on weekends?! Really bugs me!

I’m eagerly awaiting the post on how you get your nails so perfect Kiki :)

I usually always have my nails in some shade of red, but I love this blue! Such a vibrant colour.

  7. A says:

Suzi Says Feng Shui is actually a bright yet dusty blue — I thought it’d be too bright for me but I actually found it rather wearable. It’s like a bright blue that’s been left out in the sun. Really quite gorgeous. :D

I loved these dolls, strawberry was my favourite i just loved the scent.
I think i remember my sister getting one through maccas when they tried to relaunch the brand.

love nail colour by the way, Ive never been brave enough to try anything other than beige and a bright tangerine for summer.

  9. Mrs W says:

Oh wow – I used to LOVE Strawberry Shortcake… I used to have the talcum powder if I remember correctly…

Love your nails! I’m so unco at painting my nails… yours look perfection!

Just an update on wearability of W7 Midnight Blue – I was quite impressed that it had minimal tip wear even though I was doing a lot of decluttering, and only started to chip after 3 days. That’s good for me, cos I don’t usually wear nailpolish longer than 2 days.

Scout – Orly Blue Suede is not unlike this colour actually, just with a gloss of course. LOVE Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees. Funnily, I picked up another W7 colour (no name sticker) that looks similar. Will have to do a post soon :)

Reezy – I know! You’ve reminded me. I’ve been so slack about that. I will try and do that this weekend :)

Delicieux – It is vibrant in the sunlight, but I was probably a bit remiss at not taking an indoor photo. Indoors it looks quite navy blue.

A – I like the sound of a dusty blue. I might have to track it down. Thanks!

justagirl – Wow, if maccas couldn’t help them relaunch, the concept must somehow miss the mark with today’s kids. Pity, cos I think it’s a lovely alternative to Bratz dolls :(

Mrs W – Thankyou :) Stay tuned for posts on how I do my nails. A lot of it is in the clean-up.
