A Classic
I think there are a number of nailpolish classics that will probably stand the test of time, and always be among those best-selling shades, regardless of the swings and roundabouts of fashion.
Chanel's Vamp and Particuliere spring to mind.
So does OPI You Don't Know Jacques and China Glaze Ruby Pumps.
And for a true, classic red – Revlon's Love That Red.
Well, maybe I'm a shade off the mark and it should be Revlon Red, but I do think it is just a shade.
Love That Red is a touch yellower than Revlon Red, but last night, when I felt like a simple, classic look, I rummaged past OPI O'Hare & Nails Look Great (too blue-base) and China Glaze Vermillion (too pink) and unearthed this old Revlon staple.
You can even see the writing on the bottle is practically worn away, it's that old.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Pretty much all nail polish looks sexier on short nails. None more-so than red.
I don't know why. It just does.
I really wish I could get my nails to slow down. Most of the reason I don't wear more nailpolish is because I hate trimming and filing my nails.
Such a bore.
I think the exception to short = sexy is the very pale, French manicure, natural nail kind of colours. Longer nails look very elegant, feminine and 'polished' in those shades.

I decided to team my classic red nails with my outfit today.
They're the exact same shade as this cardigan I always wear with my favourite ponyskin bird brooch.
I've decided I'm going to wear more brooches. I love them, and because fewer people wear them in comparison to other jewellery, they're always so much more eyecatching.

What are your classic nailpolishes? The ones you'll keep buying as long as they keep manufacturing? I love hearing other people's favourite colours.
xx Kiki

Revlon ‘Craving Coral’ or OPI ….something about Chihuahua’s? They both go with anything . And I totally agree, short nails are oh-so-sexy and oh-so-practical!
Nat – I’m very partial to corals, although that word does conjure up unfortunate associations with 80s frosted coral lipsticks and matching nailpolish. Frosts…. ew!
ooh, this colour looks amazing on you!
i can sympathise as i too suffer for ‘nails that grow like the clappers’ syndrome. those buggers are so strong they never crack or break either… what a problem to have hey!
my favourite revlon would have to be cherries in the snow, although i’m really into plummy at the moment!

ballet flats – I only have half your problem, mine grow fast but they’re not as strong as yours! I would love mine to never crack or break. Ok, I’m jealous.
I’d say Cherries in the Snow is another Revlon classic. Gorgeous, gorgeous colour.
ulta3 Allure and Baby Pink.
my type of classics that are my go-to polishes when i need the polished look without the colour.
very neutral. very beautiful.
Emma – Oh yes, ulta3 Allure! That is a gorgeous colour, slightly mushroomy. I use it as a base under glitters and sheerer shades, because it’s the perfect base colour for those kind of polishes to stand against.
Beautiful colour! I love your bird brooch.
I don’t know if I have a favourite colour. It’s too hard to pick just one.. but maybe, just maybe it would be OPI Over the Taupe? I love a good neutral and it goes with anything and everything.
I’m all about short nails, long nails make me feel ill.
Reezy – I love a good neutral too. They are so elegant, but Over the Taupe’s not boring like some in that colour family. Hehe… long nails on guys are worse. I gag.
Amazing polish! I love vibrant red colours, but it’s so hard to find the perfect one! My perfect red is probably OPI Red My Fortune Cookie, it’s slightly orange based so it’s super bright.
My fave polish is probably OPI Black Cherry Chutney, such a gorgeous vampy with subtle red shimmer <3
And yes to short nails! Long nails seem tacky to me.
aelie – I have a mini of OPI Red My Fortune Cookie which I’ve never tried, so I really must cos I love orange based reds too. Agree that long nails seem tacky… I think they age a younger woman’s hands too.
That red is great! Some of my faves: I’m not really a waitress (best red in the history of ever!), You don’t know Jacques and Black Cherry Chutney (I love it but don’t wear very often because I find it discolours my nails). One of my all time faves is Bogota Blackberry but I haven’t seen it around for a while.
I’m biased towards shorter nails too, mostly because mine won’t grow very long before breaking! Plus I think darker colours look better on shorter nails. I have the opposite problem to you… I wish my nails would grow quicker.

Suze – I keep hearing raves about Black Cherry Chutney. The best base coat I’ve found for preventing stains and discolouration is NailTek foundation II. It actually seems to make my nails whiter, and no yellowing at all.
Love the red nailpolish kiki. Particularly with the beautiful red cardi! I agree about the polish on short nails, I can’t stand it when my nails are long.
Katie – Thanks hon. Glad to see there are other short nail fans out there. I remember a time when all I wanted was to grow my nails a centimeter long. I couldn’t bear that now.
Hi Pet – it’s been so long! I will be in Melbourne on the weekend of the 25/26 of this month? Coffee?
So funny that you mention You Don’t Know Jacques – I wore it today for the first time in ages and I remembered how gorgeous it is. My absolute favorite out of my now substantial collection.
Hope you are well and fingers crossed we can catch up!
Scouty
Scout – Absolutely! I will email you. Looking forward to it
Just to start with I love short nails.
My classics would be OPI Over the Taupe, OPI Keys to my Karma and Chanel Rouge Noir,
Jaztee – Yes, I think Over the Taupe would be up there with You Don’t Know Jacques as one of OPIs neutral classics.
Can you do a Nail polish haul? Would love to see your stash!
K – I will do one! I’ve found a new way to store them, so I’ll do a post soon.
