The Life and Times of Kiki Chaos

When tempest tossed, embrace chaos.

Itsy bitsy, teeny weeny, yellow polka dot…

January17

….um, toenails.

Last year, Katy Perry made polka dot manicures very popular.

I remember painting polka dots on my nails when I was a kid, and it does look adorably cute.

So when I erroneously chose to paint my toenails with the most horrendous neon yellow polish by TBN…

… and it looked like I'd caught some kind of nasty infection…

…I wondered if polka dots might save the day.

I think it did… by a very, very slim margin.

It was a fun novelty to walk around with polka dot toes for a couple of days, but the white dots couldn't disguise the puke-iness of that yellow for long.

I'll give polka dots another go, but with a much prettier base colour next time.

***

As a kid, I think I just randomly dotted the spots all over my nails, but I read how to do it properly this time.

Once I had the base colour, I dipped a toothpick into the white polish and – starting at the base of the nail – dotted a line of 3, then a line of 4, a line of 3 and so on.

That makes the dots nice and aesthetically spaced apart.

Too easy.

Maybe I'll copy Katy Perry and do my fingernails next time, too.

xx Kiki

How adorable! You must have a very steady hand! If I tried to do that I’d end up with half a white toe. :S

Oohh these look adorable! I remember doing polka dot nails when I was younger too. Thanks for the tips re doing it correctly, I must give it a go! x

ooh i love polkdots! Can’t wait to see what colours you do next time!

Reezy – lol, you’re funny. I think the trick is to not overload the toothpick. A teeny drop of polish is easier to control, and you can re-dot the same spot til you get it right.

aelie – Ooh, do it and do a post too. I wanna see! :)

Emma – Ok, I’m doing my nails today so I’ll see what I can do… :)

So cute. I don’t have your parience to sit there and paint every single dot. That is truly remarkable… I’d like to see it in hot pink and white!

I was so inspired by your post that I redid my fingernails in polka-dot fashion right after reading your post! I used a wooden skewer (alas, no toothpicks in the house for some unknown reason) to make my dots, and I simply can not stop looking at them. I’ve never done polka-dots before, and it’s so pretty! Thanks Kiki <3

    omg those are too cute!

I love this! I’m going to try it with a dusty blue base.

Have you seen the OPI spinoff of cheaper nail polishes called “Nicole by OPI”? I’m curious about what these are like and you’re the authority on nail polishes as far as I’m concerned hehe. I spotted them in a Brisbane Terry White pharmacy… RRP of about $15. Any thoughts?

  12. Kiki says:

inertia – Red and white would look so sweet!

Yasmin – I think a softer yellow would look nicer. This one was too loud and neon. I’ve even used an itty bitty twig from the garden before, when I haven’t had toothpicks!

Kitty – Believe it or not, it’s actually really quick and easy. I like the idea of hot pink and white too. I will have to give it a go. And thank you for the award, lovely! It’s my first ever – yay!

Em – Oh wow, that’s great! I love inspiring people’s manicures :) What colours did you do??

  13. Kiki says:

Clare – Thank you! That combo does have a lot of cute factor.

Annie – Ooh, dusty blue sounds gorgeous. I like!

Catherine – Oh, you’re so lovely, but have you seen some of the nailpolish blogs? I’m way down in the paddling pool when it comes to being a nailpolish authority :D But I’m touched you think that, sweet. I’ve seen Nicole by OPI and tbh, apart from the fact that none of the colours particularly grab me, I think the bottles are so ugly! They look like a goitre :( I also refuse to pay retail for OPI in Australia – the markup disgusts me. You can buy 4 or 5 bottles from 8ty8 or Transdesign for the cost of one or two bottles here.

  14. Catherine^ says:

I totally agree about markup! And yes the bottle looks a bit like an OPI bottle that’s deformed hehe.

  15. Georgia says:

VERY CUTE! I absolutely love anything Katy Perry inspired :)

  16. Yasmin says:

Ok i have pale blue on my toes but I have decided to do white polkadots over the top.
